to those i used to know

dear former friends,

sometimes i stumble upon things that are outrageous, whose outrageousness only YOU would truly appreciate.  sometimes they're not even outrageous stumblings, but maybe just ironic ruminations about our past that, when looking back, seem suddenly transformed.  in those moments, i miss being able to reach out to you.  laugh over our shared past and reminiscence.  but then i sober to the present.  you and i don't laugh together anymore.

sometimes, i remember who i used to be when you knew me.  i think you'd find the core of me to have remained largely unchanged.  things were just simpler then.  i wonder if i'll ever be able to say that about this moment.  now.  sometimes when i wonder things like that i wish you were still around to discuss it with.

occasionally i'll wonder how it all happened.  how we ever became so splintered and fragmented that there could be a break of irreparable magnitude.  i remember so much maintenance along the way.  sometimes i think about the effort i made to keep our friendship from falling apart, and then i think about the times i walked away and let it shatter behind me.  sometimes closure is a project you have to craft on your own.

i have lots of old friends, and new ones.  but none of them will ever know me in the same way you did, as the person i was... or how i've grown.  no two will ever communicate in the way that we could, only with each other.  it's what bestfriendships are made of.  and each is unique and precious in those qualities.  any time you develop one of those friendships, you can almost wrap yourself in it.  it's a safety blanket of love, and understanding, and connection that just cannot be replicated or replaced.  it's the shared fear, the intimacy of friendships or any other relationship for that matter.  you told me your darkest secrets, shared with me your deepest fears, confided in me your inner-most thoughts about all the things that mattered to you.

and now, you're just someone i used to know.

i hope you're happy, whoever you turned out to be.

so long,
corey lynn.
